Hudson River Region

The first commercially successful grape-growing and winemaking in the United States began on Croton Point in the Hudson River Region in 1827. The Underhills, Father and sons, grew 75 acres of grapes. They shipped table grapes to New York City on sloops and built a still standing brick winery in which they made wine.

"Brotherhood, the oldest winery in America." Its vineyard was planted in 1837 and, although its ownership has changed, the winery has been operating continuously since 1839

In 1951 Everett Crosby, a writer for radio , and his wife started a commercial vineyard using the first French American hybrid grapes in the region on High Tor mountain. These grapes supplanted the earlier American varieties in the region.
